This tape is a continuation of an interview with Arkadii L'vivich Burshtein. (Part 2 of 3. See MDV 439 and MDV 681) He talks about Sobolivka before the war, a town of about one thousand people. He talks about the Jews who worked at the sugar factory, and other Jewish occupations. He recalls food customs and talks about matzos for Passover. He remembers the synagogue and how it was dangerous to attend, particularly for the young people. His grandfather, who was a cobbler, was deeply religious, and served in the military under Tsar Nicholas II. Arkadii went to a Yiddish school and remembers Yiddish councils and clubs from before the war. He discusses how his grandfather celebrated Jewish holidays. He discusses Jewish-Christian relations before the war and recalls his Christian friends. The tape concludes with a dialectological questionnaire.
